Glee
Lisa McClain
Summary
Glee was talking about how grammar isn’t everything. It depends on the situation and how thing go
about it. Glee uses the examples of the two women at a job inter view. He says “what
is important is not language, and surely not grammar, but saying (writing)-doing-being-valuing-believing combinations.” Also
we have to “hold the right values, beliefs, and attitudes”. At one point he
goes on about Discourse and how it’s a “identity kit”, basically about our
rules of how it all goes.
Lisa, the focus of Gee's article does not seem to be grammar. He is interested in "Discourse" (with a capital "D"). What are the terms he uses to lay out his argument? For example, what does he mean by primary and secondary Discourse? Why does he feel as if this topic is an important one? How might you find similarities and differences between Gee's concept of "Discourse" and Swales's conversation of "discourse communities"?
